73rd Concert Season Annual Memorial Weekend Concert

Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War I, the Santa Monica Symphony’s Annual Memorial Weekend Concert presents works of Maurice Ravel, George Butterworth and Ralph Vaughan Williams, who were all WWI veterans. The concert will begin with Manuel de Falla’s Ritual Fire Dance, followed by Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin, each movement of which was dedicated to the memory of a friend of the composer who had died in the war. The performance will continue with English composer George Butterworth’s short pastoral idyll, The Banks of Green Willow, which symbolizes the nostalgia for the long-lost halcyon Edwardian age before the war. Lastly, to end the night, Symphony No. 3 “Pastoral” by Vaughan Williams confronts the horror of war and more importantly, resonates with the sounds of peace, calling for love and hope in the world. The concert will be held at 7 pm on Sunday, May 27, 2018 at Barnum Hall on the campus of Santa Monica High School. All Santa Monica Symphony Concerts are FREE and open seating. Pre-concert lecture by our host, Rich Capparela will be held at 7 pm.
